St.Marys Chruch, Caerau

St. Mary's Church, Caerau.. Church Rd, Cardiff CF5 5NA

This site is estimated to date back at least six thousand years and is one of the oldest marked sites in South Wales. Standing on a promontory with a wonderful view over - looking the city of Cardiff you understand why so many have considered it special. It stands within an iron-age fort on a previously occupied Neolithic site next to a Roman settlement. A truly amazing place!

The recent history of the church is also fascinating. It was completely rebuild by a remarkable minister, the reverend Victor Jones in 1961 only to go through a consistent spell of vandalism in the 1980's, leaving it a ruin for a second time. Anyone who remembers the Ely riots will understand why. The impact on this sacred space is a clear example of what happens when Peace is lost in a community.
