"I am very fortunate to be one of the first Assembly Members for the Vale of Glamorgan, living in Barry and working to build confidence in the Assembly and Welsh Government which has the power and responsibility to make a positive difference to peoples' lives as well as the economy and Welsh society as a whole.

I meet inspiring people every day in the community, in local groups, schools, businesses and in the street. People know who I am and want to stop and chat when I am out and about and give me advice, words of wisdom and their experiences of life with all their ups and downs. I also hear some very sad stories about people's lives and I try to support them - to tackle injustices and make changes to government policies and laws.

I am inspired by Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury because he always speaks up for the poor and he is a strong principled Welsh voice in the world, but I have been lucky to know Rhodri Morgan as a friend and leader of Wales, followed by Carywn Jones who is making his mark in Wales and the world.

In 2012 I am particularly inspired by a young Barry pioneer - Lucy Dickensen  - who has set up the Safe Foundation to empower people and communities across the world."
